Hill Country summers are long and hot, and much of the heat that gets into a home comes through the glass. Better glass can make a real difference to comfort and cooling bills, often without replacing the whole window.
Why windows matter so much in Texas
Walls and attics are insulated, but glass is thin. Sun on west- and south-facing windows can turn a room into a greenhouse by late afternoon, and your air conditioner has to work harder to keep up.
Insulated glass: two panes are better than one
Insulated glass has two or more panes with a sealed space between them. That space slows the heat moving from the hot side of the glass to the cool side, so less of the outdoor heat reaches the room.
Low-E glass reflects heat, not light
Low-E glass has a microscopically thin coating that reflects much of the sun’s heat and blocks a large share of UV light, while still letting daylight through. In a hot climate it is one of the most effective upgrades you can make to a window.
The benefits you will notice
- Lower cooling bills through the summer.
- More even temperatures from room to room.
- Less fading of floors, rugs and furniture.
- Less outside noise.
- Less condensation on cold winter mornings.
Upgrade the glass, keep the frame
If your frames are in good shape, you may not need new windows at all. Replacing older single-pane glass or failed units with insulated Low-E units gives you most of the benefit for a fraction of the cost of full replacement.
